How To Prepare Your Dog For The Rabies Vaccine
This applies to only adult dogs. For puppies, see vaccine protocol here.
If you are like me, you are dreading taking your dog AGAIN for another Rabies vaccine. Rabies vaccines are required by law every 3 years. I have seen many vets still want to only do 1 year vaccines and believe it or not, they DO make both 1 and 3 year vaccines. If that's your vet, find a NEW vet. He is only in it for the money. I see way too many of these vets and it makes me furious. GREED is the key word here. And to say, it really isn't about making money off that vaccine but the fact he is getting you back in the door to spend more money or maybe because that vaccine might make your pet sick. This could go all kinds of directions but you get my point. They are not looking out for the best interest of your dog. Make sure you ask for the three year. Some cities accept titers but that is a rarity. Also chronically ill dogs (Cancer, Autoimmune, seizure disorders etc) can get exceptions as well. Check your state for this here. I have read a lot of articles where holistic vets tell you what to do AFTER your dog has received a vaccine. I want to prepare you for before, during and after.
These recommendations come from human reactions as well and is recommended by one of the top neurosurgeons in the world with about 30 years experience in medicine. So I am bringing you this list I put together to help your dog have the least amount of side effects if at all possible. Too many pets have died just from a Rabies vaccine so preparation is crucial. Do NOT get the rabies vaccine on same day as surgery. Do NOT get other vaccines on the same day. Wait 30 days to do surgery or recieve another vaccine if absolutely needed. Do NOT give a vaccine to a sick or chronically ill, recently injured or any type of illness that has weakened the immune system to a pet. Now with that said, you want to prepare for the Rabies vaccine. I only mention Rabies here but you can do this with all vaccines and I actually recommend that you do. I hope you are feeding a good wholesome homemade diet with all the correct supplementation and you aren't feeding kibble or processed garbage to your dog. Same goes for all of those store bought treats. Most all are made in China and loaded with toxins. This is such a critical part of your pets health. Don't ignore this. Kibble is not food. It is junk all rolled into a ball. Want to learn about kibble..click here. |
You want to give your dog the best diet possible, learn how in the "Complete Guide To Natural Health and Homemade Diet For Dogs" book.
So preparing for the Rabies vaccine is key. By adding in supplements, keeping the food and water clean, removing toxins and chemicals from your home and yard and getting rid of flea and tick meds and heartworm meds, you can have a strong immune system in your dog. Adding in a little extra supplements is key to preparing for the Rabies and helping to reduce any reactions. Vaccines come with many health hazards so it's best to always prepare. You can start 2-4 weeks ahead of time depending on your dog's immune system and diet. By doing this, you can add in vit C (Magnesium Ascorbate) to the diet (or better yet, the natural form-Camu Camu). Always know adding in vit C can cause loose stools so work up slowly on the amounts. Start with small amounts. Med/large dogs 1/4 - 1/2 tsp to start. Toy dogs 1/8th tsp to start, then work up, increase this to 2-4 times a day in the highest amount possible without causing diarrhea. Yep there is a fine line there. You will know but go slow. |
Adding in a little extra Selenium, Curcumin and Quercetin are great as well. Try to give these within an hour of getting the vaccine.
Vit E in its natural form (not "dl" - Alpha Tocopherol) is critical in the diet along with preparing for a vaccine. Astaxanthin is good at protecting against the toxic effects of the vaccine as well. Zinc given daily for a couple days along with within an hour before the vaccine will help stop the damaging effects. Make sure it is not mixed with copper or other substances. Zinc only. Only use this for several days then stop (day before, day of, day after). Zinc is very protective against vaccine toxicity. Remember if you are purchasing human supplements, make sure there is only the one ingredient you are looking for in it. The dosage on labels are usually based off of a 150 lb human. So for a 20 lb dog; provide a dash (1/8-1/4 capsule); 50 lb dog- 1/4-1/2 of a capsule; 100+ lb dog-1 full capsule. Extra magnesium is also a great additive as well. So do the same as you do for the Zinc. Magnesium Malate or Citrate is recommended. Add in some celery and parsley to the diet several days before and day of. You should do these things up until the day of the vaccine. And it certainly won't hurt after the fact. Give good quality fish oils daily. |
Also give the homeopathic remedy Lyssin for the Rabies vaccine. It is recommended to do this a few days before, day of and a few days after. If you have a small dog or a dog that has had some mild reactions in the past, I would recommend using this for a couple of weeks, possibly a month. Dogs can show reactions for months after a vaccine so always keep a close eye out. (scratching, coughing, hair loss, seizures, lumps or hair loss at injection site, change in behavior etc).
Dosing:
3 pellets daily - small dogs
4 pellets daily - medium dogs
5 pellets daily - large dogs
For the other vaccines use Thuja homeopathic remedy with same dosing if you plan on getting them. Please see core vaccines here.

ll the above can be done starting at least one week before, during, and at least a week after.
Make sure your dog gets plenty of sunshine during this time as well. If your dog isn't getting sunshine every day, then add a little vitamin D3 into the food for these several days of before, during and after. A low dose depending on your dog's size is sufficient. Do not overdo this vitamin. It is a fat soluble meaning your dog's body does not excrete it. It goes into the liver. Do not give this on a regular daily basis as part of the diet. Seek out a holistic vet for guidance on this vitamin if you plan on doing so. If softgels, poke hole or cut off tip and squirt onto foods. Or you can mix in with organic plain Kefir or greek yogurt. Use this vitamin the day before, day of and day after, then stop giving it. Alternative: You can use cod liver oil for these few days. Cod liver oil will be much safer but I do not recommend it for daily long term use. Sardines are also high in vitamin D as well as Salmon and recommended for daily use. |
Do not give your dog mushrooms, whey protein or beta-glucans during this process. Avoid all immune-stimulating supplements.
Avoid oils that suppress immunity and increase inflammation such as corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, canola and peanut oils.
Make sure your dog won't be under stress from travel (vacations) or guests in your home. Keep things calm and no stress for your dog for several weeks.

Ask your vet for the Thimerosal Free Vaccine. Call ahead to make sure they carry it. If they don't, find a vet that does. My vet keeps them in the Ferret dept of his collection of vaccines. LOL! The vial should have a red label. Watch them draw up the vaccine in the room with you and watch them give it. If you can get a look or know the date on the vial..the older the serum, the weaker it may be and less chance of a reaction. Especially for small dogs. I worry a lot about small dogs. They have to get the same amount as big dogs for these Rabies vaccines so it's seriously overdosing the small dogs and that's where the big problems come in. Maybe if you are buddy-buddy with your vet, ask for the oldest dated vial in the batch especially if your dog is small or has had past mild reactions. You need to know for yourself what's going in your dog so pay attention to everything going on around you. Now vets will probably charge you an office visit because you are seeing the vet, but isn't your dog's life worth it? I know mine is.
Once you completed this dreaded task of the vaccine, detox the liver also. Add in Milk Thistle the day of. Keep the food and water (filtered) clean, do not use any flea and tick meds AT ALL and avoid exposure to lawn chemicals such as fertilizers, bug and weed killers etc) Use DE instead.
Avoid air fresheners, candles, laundry soaps, bleach, dryer sheets and shampoos to name a few in your home. All toxic! Use chemical free products. Even Windex is toxic along with oven cleaners. Shewee!
Use milk thistle for at least a week but if I were you, I would do it for 30 days. It certainly won't hurt and it's great to detox your dog every 6 months anyway.
You can also apply a cold pack to injection area as soon as you get home from getting vaccine. Do that a couple times during the day. It helps to block the immune reaction. Its best to do it immediately after vaccine if you want to carry an ice pack with you, otherwise do it ASAP. Maybe have one handy in your vehicle.
The key here is to have a strong immune system. If your dog is on a kibble diet, you have a much bigger challenge to avoid severe reactions. But by doing the above mentioned..you can help reduce some of it.

I hope you will consider a homemade diet (raw preferably). Dogs and cats were not made to eat the kibble made and sold in the USA and other countries. And with so many recalls, deaths, illnesses etc, why would you even bother? Kibble is nothing more than a lazy man's diet. It's like feeding your kids McDonalds every single day and expecting them to be healthy? IMPOSSIBLE! Why do that to your pets? I encourage you to learn how to make your pets foods. It doesn't have to be complicated. I wrote a book just for newbies to help people learn what's good and how to balance the diet for dogs. It's not a hard task. It's up to you how much time you want to invest. I can give you several options. Pick up a copy of my book and feel free to email me anytime for added questions. Anything to help change a life for a much healthier one.
